My fellow curators, Liz Way and Ariele Elia, and I all found this decade to be the era in which expeditions made a decided impact on high fashion. Not only were designers turning to the Space Age, deep sea diving, and the Arctic for inspiration, so too were fashion editors. We were so taken with the vibrant imagery that we chose John Cowan\u2019s girl on an ice floe as the \u201cposter girl\u201d for our exhibition and book.<\/p>\n<p>The influence of expeditions on 1960s fashion photography was celebrated brilliantly in the pages of leading magazines throughout the decade. This phenomenon is understandable, as the rise of youth styles and the deterioration of established fashion codes allowed photographers to experiment far beyond their studios. Magazine editors occasionally styled models in actual space suits and diving equipment. Editorial copy stated that Avedon \u201ccalls up the outer steppes of some unimagined frontier \u2014 and ambience of fearless, far-out, magnificence. Feathered, furred, leathered, or swathed in silks, his Beautiful Barbarians project is a proud, untamed, magnetism which all women may look to . . .\u201d&sup2; The lead model in the spread was China Machado. Of Portuguese and Chinese\/Indian descent, her non-western looks enhanced the \u201cexotic\u201d look of the \u201cbarbarian\u201d images that, in turn, articulated the period\u2019s racist view that indigenous peoples were less civilized than cultures south of the Arctic, an idea that continued decades after they were first denigrated by early European explorers.  <\/p>\n<p>Despite the less-than-enlightened approach of some fashion imagery, dramatic location shoots became a mainstay of <em>Vogue<\/em> magazine from 1963 to 1971, when Diana Vreeland was its editor-in-chief. Dynamic and highly creative, Vreeland consistently pushed the limits of fashion styling and photography throughout her decades-long career. She was among the first editors to oversee location shoots around the world while an editor at <em>Harper\u2019s Bazaar<\/em> during World War II. By the time she arrived at <em>Vogue<\/em>, Vreeland not only expanded the scope of travel to exotic locations, she amped up the glamour quotient and sense of daring.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_78\" style=\"width: 870px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78\" src=\"http:\/\/exhibitions.fitnyc.edu\/expedition\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2017\/10\/PM_01_edit-1024x688.jpg\" alt=\"Vogue, November 1964, photograph by John Cowan. Copyright The John Cowan Archive.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Among Vreeland\u2019s most interesting ideas was an editorial shoot that appeared in the November 1964 issue, shortly after her <em>Vogue<\/em> appointment. She chose British photographer John Cowan to capture her fantasy of high fashion among the icebergs.  Cowan was an inspired choice: he was celebrated for a dynamic style that reflected the energetic atmosphere of 1960s Swinging London. Cowan, together with his partner, model and photographer Jill Kennington, \u201csparked an exciting period of high-octane image-making for numerous magazines.\u201d&sup3; An inspiration for the main character in Michelangelo Antonioni&#8217;s 1966 film <em>Blow-Up<\/em>, Cowan\u2019s \u201cenergy and unconventional approach\u201d inspired one of the film\u2019s most memorable scenes. According to Kennington, the \u201cDavid Hemmings\u2013and-Veruschka scene for <em>Blow-Up<\/em> was pure Cowan. Antonioni must have seen him working \u2014 I never saw anyone else take pictures quite that way. The shooting on the floor downwards, completely fluid, unhindered by tripods, etc., was typical Cowan.\u201d&#8308; <\/p>\n<p>Fashion historian and journalist, vogue.com staffer Laird Borelli-Persson&#8309; wrote that the fashion team comprised Cowan, Kennington, fellow model Antonia Bioeckesteyn, photography assistant, Allan Ballard, and sittings editor Mary Kruming. That group, accompanied by the Canadian Royal Mounted Police, or Mounties, found their way north to Resolute Bay on Cornwallis Island in the Arctic Circle. According to Borelli, they had more than the cold to contend with: there were the unnerving silence, blinding brightness, and technical difficulties. \u201cThe day started,\u201d according to Cowan, \u201cwhen Mary Kruming said, \u2018John, the sun\u2019s shining.\u2019 The first problem we had was that both the Hasselblad cameras froze. We presume they froze as the shutters wouldn\u2019t work. Then we found that the film was bending and cracking because of the cold. Copyright The John Cowan Archive.<\/p><\/div>\nThe results are magnificent, but as John Cowan recounted in the magazine \u201cfor the girls, just wearing these thin clothes it was fantastically hard work.\u201d&#8311; He successfully captured both the poetry of the remote and icy landscape and the otherworldly beauty of the models clad in white and silver. While the fashions were hardly appropriate in the frigid Arctic landscape, the images evoke the desolation and isolation of the Arctic, as well as that of the moon, \u201ca glittering world\u201d where the \u201cthe very limit of cold\u201d was \u201clike the inside of a diamond.\u201d&#8312;<\/p>\n<p>We are most grateful to Carolyn Cowan, John\u2019s daughter, for generously allowing us to use these beautiful images in all components of our exhibition and on the cover of our book.
