Uniforms are a continual source of inspiration.

Ever since the success of his 2009 Pitti Uomo presentation, Thom Browne has regularly created complex sets and choreography for his collections.

The sets often mimic the locations of particular types of uniforms—for example, the schoolhouse of his women’s spring 2016 show, and the grand backdrop for his men’s spring 2014 show, which recalls both royal guards and toy soldiers.

Karl Lagerfeld transforms the Grand Palais in Paris each season to show his Chanel ready-to-wear collection. Recently, the elaborate sets have recreated everyday locations, such as a brasserie, an airplane terminal, and even a supermarket.

Lagerfeld injects the uniforms of each place into the presentations as looks and also as props—visual elements that enhance his mise-en-scène (echoing the real-life treatment of uniforms as backdrop).
