Fabric

At its core, fabric is the weaving together of many individual threads into a surface. However, fabric is not only physical–it is also symbolic. Fabric can convey wealth, identity, culture, status, and values. Glittering fabrics can also hold many contradictions. They can communicate warmth or coolness, classiness or tackiness, authenticity or performance, and power or marginalization.
The materials in this section consist of traditional woven and knit fabrics beside inventive coated leathers, metal sheets and discs, and reflective plastics to showcase changing ideas about what light-catching fabric can be and communicate.

Crystals, rhinestones, sequins, & beads

Fashion has used applied embellishments for centuries, using shiny facets and the movement of dangling pieces, such as beads and crystals, to draw the eye. Sequins are often made of plastic, though environmentally conscious designers have experimented with seaweed-based sequins, to maximize glamour while minimizing the ecological impact.
